Why Do Muslims Have Their Own Calendar?

If you’re Muslim—or even if you aren’t—you might have come across a calendar in which the names of the months are in Arabic, and the year count is different from the one we commonly use today. This is known as the Islamic or Hijri Calendar. Unlike the standard calendar we use daily, called the Gregorian calendar, the Islamic calendar is based on the moon rather than the sun.
